The president, Federation of Tourism
Association of Nigeria (FTAN) Mr. Sam Alabi, yesterday asked the federal
government to set up an intervention fund for the tourism industry.
Alabi said in Lagos that the setting up of the fund by government was the only way the sector could develop.
The FTAN president said government should not pay any lip service to the sector, adding that it had contributed to the growth of the nation's economy.
"Several billions have been pumped into other sectors of the economy. But the tourism sector is yet to get anything. This sector has created so much job opportunities and is still doing so," he said.
Alabi said that the tourism industry had contributed to national development through job creation.
He said that members of the association were faced with financial problems as a result of huge loans they had collected from banks.
The tourism practitioner urged government to quickly address the issue of intervention fund to enable its members access it.
He said that FTAN would continue to discuss with the federal government to ensure that the issue of intervention fund received the deserved attention.
FTAN was established in 1997 as the umbrella body for the tourism sector in Nigeria.
