Oshiomhole Rewards Edo Athletes From Eko 2012

The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has rewarded all the medalists who brought glory to the state during the 2012 Eko Sports Festival.
At a reception ceremony held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin city, in honour of the athletes, a cash reward of N1million, N300,000 and N200,000 was announced for each Gold, Silver and Bronze medalist respectively.
The Governor also announced a cash prize of N1Million each for gold winning coach while other coaches received N300, 000.
The State which emerged 4th position on the overall medal table at the Festival won a total 102 medals; 25 Gold, 24 Silver and 53 Bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the Governor has called on the National Sports Commission to put measures in place to check corruption at the sports festival.
Speaking at the event, he alleged that some states hired athletes as mercenaries to record achievements for them and called on the authorities of National Sports Festival to put an end to corrupt practices in the festival.
He claimed the reason why Nigerian referees are never listed to officiate in international matches as Assistant Referees or main Referees is due to the corrupt practices in sporting competitions.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Felix Otoide who was present at the occasion condemned the win-at-all-cost attitude of some states, stating that the Edo state will regain first position if sporting competitions are reviewed and revived.
