East West Road Will Be Ready In 2014 – Minister

The Federal Government has identified insecurity as one of the major challenges facing the completion of the East West Road.

The road traverses through Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe made this statement on Thursday during an inspection tour of the road to make clarification why the project has not been completed.
Mr Orubebe also urged the traditional leaders to appeal to youth in their communities to shun violence and kidnapping and embrace peace for this project to go on successfully.
From November 2012 till date about six contractors have been kidnapped, three Setraco workers killed and a soldier killed while working on the road.
Though the East West Road project was awarded in 2006, work could not commence due to lack of funding and contractors were not mobilized to site until 2010, this was also seen as one of the challenges facing the completion of the road.
During the tour, the Minister stopped at various locations where work is going on presently on the road to assess the progress so far on the road.
The minister promised and emphasized that the East West Road will be completed in December 2014.
