The wife of the Imo State governor, Mrs.
Nkechinyere Okorocha has described the death of a 4-year-old girl after
being raped by a 30-year-old man as an unfortunate and disheartening
incident.
At a press briefing in the Imo State capital, Owerri, to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, Mrs. Okorocha called for serious intervention by the state government.
She maintained that the rape incident is a pointer to the fact that the government must come out with specific laws to address rape cases as well as violence against girls and women in the country.
Mrs Okorocha added that Nigerian women have not taken their rightful place in stirring the affairs of the nation.
For this reason, she said her office will continue to initiate programmes that will encourage the empowerment of women in the country.
