The House of Representatives has summoned the
head of the National Inland Waterways and the Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety Agency to appear before it to explain their
failure to carry out the resolutions of the House.
The House adopted this resolution after considering a motion brought before it by Representative Robinson Uwak who drew the attention of the House to the recent marine accident on Monday 18th July where about 166 people traveling from Oron in Akwa Ibom state to Gabon were killed.
Representative Uwak said the agencies did not implement an earlier resolution by the House directing the agencies to improve some safety standards and rescue operations.
He said the failure of the affected agencies to carry out the resolution of the house has contributed to the increase in the number of fatalities on the waterways.
