Police Parade 'Killer' of Kano Lawmakers

Kano — Two men suspected of being responsible for the assassination of two state lawmakers were paraded by the Police in Kano yesterday. The Police said Ibrahim Lawal, 24, is the hired killer who pulled the trigger while 54-year-old businessman Alhaji Sale Kura is the sponsor of the killings.
State House of Assembly members Ibrahim Abba Garko (PDP) of Garko constituency and Danladi Isa Kademi (ANPP) of Gaya constituency were shot dead separately in November and December by unknown gunmen in Kano.
Addressing journalists at the Kano Police Command headquarters yesterday, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim K. Idris said the two suspects were arrested after a tip off received by the police on December 24.
He said the alleged killer Lawal confessed that his team was hired for the job for N100,000 and had been paid N30,000 in advance, adding that Alhaji Sale was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano.
However, while fielding questions from journalists, the two suspects denied the offence. Lawal said he confessed to it because of the torture he was subjected to in the hands of the police, while his alleged sponsor Alhaji Sale said he never had any contact with the principal suspect even though he said they live in the same neighbourhood.
In his account of the arrests, the Police commissioner said: "Based on the information (tip off), one Ibrahim Lawal of Layin Yarbawa Unguwa Uku quarters was arrested in connection with the killing of late Hon. Danladi Isah Kademi.
"During interrogation, he confessed to have physically participated in the attack and shot the late honourable legislators. He further confessed to have joined the gang of hired killers in January 2012, with their gang leader and armourer one Abdullahi alias Mabo of Filin Cashew in Unguwa Uku quarters Kano State."
Idris said the killing had nothing to do with the insurgent Boko Haram group, saying "it was either for political reasons or otherwise."
"That they were sponsored for the killing of the two honourable members by Alhaji Saleh Kura, 54 years, living at Layin Yarbawa Unguwa Uku quarters Kano, who runs a boutique at Sabon Gari Market.
