Jonathan In Ghana For Mahama’s Swearing In Ceremony

President Goodluck Jonathan has touched down in Accra, Ghana this morning for the swearing in ceremony of Ghanaian President elect, John Mahama.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati confirmed the president’s trip today via his micro-blogging social networking site, Twitter.
“President Jonathan travels to Ghana to attend the swearing in of President John D. Mahama. Returns later today”. Abati tweeted using his handle @abati1990.
Doctor Jonathan is leading the Nigerian delegation to the event which is the aftermath of a keenly contested Ghana’s presidential elections last December.
Mahama had polled 50.7 percent of the vote compared to main opposition candidate Nana Akufo-Addo’s 47.3 percent to win the election.
A large contingent of Ghanaians and other nationals are expected to witness the historic event at the square, whilst millions more across the world will watch the coronation on television at about 10:00 hours.
Expected to grace the occasion are foreign heads of state, foreign delegations, former president Jerry John Rawlings and former John Kufuor, the diplomatic community in Ghana and other very important personalities and thirteen heads of state, mostly from West Africa, including African Union chairman and president of Benin, Mr Yayi Boni.

Ghana’s major opposition party has however vowed to boycott the ceremony which it claims is the outcome of an electioneering fraud that it is already contesting in the courts of law.
