The Director-General of the Department of State Security
Services, Ekpengyong Ita on Monday said the security agencies are not
and cannot be overwhelmed by the security situation in the country.
Mr Ita, who was speaking at a workshop on the media and national security noted that the role of the media in any counter -insurgency strategy is critical.
He added that the media in Nigeria need to desist from over sensationalisation as the theoretical and dramatic ways the media reports terrorist acts encourage further violence.
He urged the media in its reportage of national security to submit to certain restraints.
It is not only the media that has taken a bashing for its handling of the volatile security situation in the country; the government has also been critiqued for its initial handling of the crisis. That notwithstanding ,experts believe that the war against terrorism in Nigeria can be won, but this can only be , when the different sectors in the country collaborate with the various security institutions in the fight as has been seen in other advanced countries.
