One
person has been confirmed dead in the fire incident that occurred on
Murtala Muhammed way in Benin City, the Edo state capital when a petrol
tanker fell into a ditch and spilled its content.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud noise before the tanker exploded and the resulting inferno razed 13 vehicles and three motor-cycles.
The raging fire burned through the road along the path where the fuel flowed, causing residents to flee their homes and others attempted to clear their property to prevent them from being burnt.
It was in the process of moving his bus from the fire that Mr Kingsley Ohangbon met his death as he was consumed by the inferno.
Officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were at the scene of the explosion to maintain free flow of traffic while fire fighters from the state’s Fire Service averted greater loss by promptly putting out the fire.
