The National Agency for the Prohibition of
Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has rescued 50
trafficked Nigerian girls from Ghana and Cote d' Ivoire.
Executive Secretary of the agency, Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen on the operation in Abuja.
She said," seven were rescued from Cote d'. Ivoire and forty from Ghana all working as sex slaves in those countries. Amongst them are three suspects acting as slave masters."
Jeddy-Agba said the operation was the second of its kind this year having rescued ten girls in July 2012 from Ivory Coast.
She said the operation was necessitated by disturbing reports from a variety of sources including the Nigerian mission in those countries, the media, Nigerians in Diaspora and civil society partners in the countries.
"The reports were all authenticated by an intelligence report from Nigeria Intelligence Agency and corroborated by a civil society organisation working in anti trafficking in Ghana known as Operation Mobilisation in Kumasi," She said.
She said the victims would be kept in protective custody in different shelters in Abuja.
