Bankers are responsible for delay of financial cases in court – CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mariam Aloma-Muktar has accused bankers of poor and inadequate documentation of requisite papers in bank-related cases, which often result in negative outcome and delay of cases in court.
Speaking at a conference for judges on banking and allied matters, Justice Muktar who was represented by another justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mamudu Muhammed said that the judiciary alone cannot take the blame for the slow dispensation of cases in various courts in the country.
Justice Muktar said that judges are also concerned and uncomfortable with the situation.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, represented by a Supreme Court judge lamented that professional bodies like bankers have not helped matters in the dispensation of justice in the country.
For the bankers, the absence of an alternative dispute resolution has hindered the dispensation of causes related to the financial sector, but in the interim, they asked the judges to refrain from granting unnecessary injunctions which has proven to increase the delay in court cases.
This is the 12th time that professionals in the banking industry and judiciary will be meeting since 2001 to deliberate on issues of mutual concern.
The thrust of this meeting is to map out ways of effective dispute resolution in the financial service sector.
