The Chairman, House of Representatives
Committee on Electoral matters, Honourable Jerry Manwe, has stated that
the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Minister of
Finance will appear before the house to explain why over 60 per cent of
the 2012 budgetary allocation of the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) is yet to be assessed by the commission at the last
quarter of the year.
This is following a report by the Acting chairman of the Commission, Mr Abdulkadir Oniyangi that out of the N35 billion budgeted for the year, the commission has only received N10 billion for the first quarter.
He said besides the resultant low budget implementation for 2012, the electoral body runs the risk of grinding to a halt if nothing is done especially as the second quarter already released is still logged in the treasury single account.
But the House Committee chairman said such account is illegal and fraudulent since INEC falls under the first line charge and all funds for them ought to be directly received.
