Officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Delta
state have killed four suspected kidnappers in Benin City, after a car
chase that ended in the Edo state capital.
According to the police sources, a government official, Mr Benson Ojoto, who was kidnapped earlier this month, escaped from his captives and his kidnappers were on their way to Edo state with his car, when the police went on their trail.
The police trailed the gang to Benin City and engaged them in a gun battle, leading to the death of four of the members, while the fifth escaped with gunshot wounds.
Confirming the incident, the Delta state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba told our senior correspondent Ambrose Okoh, in a telephone interview, that the activities of kidnappers is on the increase in Asaba, Warri and Ugheli.
He warned citizens to be security conscious, as most of the kidnappers depend on information given by close relatives of their victims.
According to him over one hundred suspects are presently in detention across the state for armed robbery cases and kidnapping.
