The Emir of Fika, Mohammed Abali Ibn Idrissa
narrowly escaped death on Friday when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb
at the mosque where he was observing the Jumat prayers in Yobe state.
The attack occurred shortly after the Jumat prayer at the Central Mosque in Potiskum.
The suicide bomber, who was reportedly heading towards the Emir, was stopped by guards. He then pulled out a gun but before he could pull the trigger, the bomb vest he was wearing exploded
The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Egbuniwe, who briefed journalists in Damaturu shortly after the incident, said the attack happened around 2pm in the afternoon.
Mr Egbuniwe said the police officers who were guiding the emir suspected the movement of the attacker and push him aside and as he fell to the ground, the bomb exploded killing the bomber while a police officer sustained a shoulder fracture.
The police commissioner said one unexploded bomb was still tied to the bombers waist pointing out that he has ordered the anti-bomb squad of the command to detonate the unexploded bomb.
He said two other police officers sustained minor injuries while two other civilians were
hospitalized after the explosive.
A similar attack happened in Borno state three weeks ago when the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba El-Kanemi escaped a suicide bomb explosion after the Jummat service in Maiduguri.
The Emir of Fika is also the chairman of Yobe state Council of Chiefs.
