A gang of heavily armed robbers on Friday night launched
an attack on a commercial bank and the Divisional Police Station in
Iyara Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, killing one of the
police officer on duty.
Another female officer was critically injured during attack and now receiving treatment in a hospital.
The commercial bank which was brought down with explosives device by robbers was said to have large sum of money in its vault but the robbers failed in reaching the target.
Confirming the two attacks, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi state, Mr Mohammed Kastina, said the hoodlums carried out simultaneous attack on the police station and the bank in an attempt to get into the police armoury for more ammunition and to cart away the money in the vault.
According to the Police boss, the robbery operation failed because of the defense staged by the police officers, thereby preventing the criminals from achieving their target.
He gave the assurance that police officers are already searching nearby forest and environs as they are optimistic that some of the robbers who sustained bullet wounds may still be hiding.
Some Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), bullet shelves, and bags were recovered at the scene of the incident.
This is coming, a few days after the Special Task Force (STF) in the state discovered a bomb factory in Okaitu, Obangede in Okehi local government area.
The bomb factory, a two room bungalow, was camouflaged as a Mosque in one room and a Church in the other with large quantities of IEDs and other ammunitions.
