Former
military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) has called for the
protection of copy right materials produced in the country as it is
crucial to the development of any nation.
Gowon made the call at the official launch of reform of the Nigerian copyright systems.
He noted that the creative industry has immensely contributed to the economic development of the country in the last two decades by providing employment opportunities for Nigerians.
“This makes it imperative for Nigeria to build structures to promote and protect the creative industry so as to harness its full potentials” he said.
Director-General of the Nigerian Copyrights Commission, Mr Afam Ezekude, added that the creative industry contributes to the GDP of other countries, but the same cannot be said of Nigeria’s industry despite its massive expansion in the last two decades.
The new reform is geared towards coordinating the different sectors of the creative industry to ensure that not only are the intellectual properties of Nigerians protected but the country reaps it’s full benefits.
