A total of 17 vessels involved in illegal
maritime activities have been intercepted by the Nigerian Navy during a
sea man-oeuvre to stamp out the activities of sea pirates from Nigeria
territorial waters.
The exercise which was code named ‘Operation FARAUTA’ (which means hunting in Hausa), was supervised by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Dele Ezeoba.
The military exercise witnessed the deployment of eight warships over a sailing period of eight days.
According to the naval chief, out of 17 vessels that were intercepted, two were found culpable because they had further explanations to give as to the quantity of product they had on board.
He also noted that some of the vessels intercepted had crude oil in excess of the quantity authorized, adding that one of the arrested vessels did not have any documentation at all.
Vice-Admiral Ezeoba warned intending oil thieves to think twice or face the firing power of the Nigerian Navy.
