Shooting: Jason Barnum, pictured, was charged with shooting a police officer on Friday
Jason Barnum was arraigned on one count of attempted murder in the first degree and two counts of assault in the third degree after the incident at Merrill Field Inn in Anchorage, Alaska, on Thursday.
The 37-year-old, whose face is covered with skulls and skeletons, lips are rimmed with skeletal teeth and right eyeball is tattooed black, was swaying from side to side in court, at times hitting his face on the microphone.
Police believe he was likely high during the shooting, which took place after officers noticed a vehicle linked to a string of burglaries in the motel's parking lot and accosted the man, according to The Alaska Dispatch.
The tattooed Barnum, who is photographed on Facebook wearing an iron cross necklace with a swastika in the middle, is associated with seven robberies in the Anchorage Hillside area, most occurring when residents were in their homes.
'When you go into people's homes at night, that’s risky behavior and that's not normal for burglars,' Lt. Anthony Henry said.
Using surveillance footage, officers traced him to room 209 of the inn where they found him with two others who also had outstanding warrants for their arrests.
When police handcuffed one of his companions, Barnum started shooting at officers with a gun stolen from one of the homes he'd robbed.

One officer was hit when a bullet slipped down the back of his vest but only required a few stitches.
Barnum confessed to at least three of the recent burglaries, adding that he robbed the homes to feed his drug habit.
Police said Barnum has an extensive criminal history and they are investigating white supremacist ties.

Facebook: A photo on his Facebook profile shows Barnum, pictured, has tattoos all over his body
Photographs from his arraignment show an eyeball tattooed in the middle of his forehead and a sinister skull painted on the top of his bald head.
The Facebook image shows the terrifying tattoos continue on his body, with the word 'pain' written on his right bicep and a Celtic cross.
