FG condemns attempted assassination of Somalia leader

The federal government on Thursday expressed concern over the assassination attempt on the life of the new Somalia president, Professor Hassan Sheik Mohamud just after he won the election.
Professor Hassan was on Monday elected by the Somali Parliament, this was the first time in 21 years that a president will be elected democratically in the country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday in a statement congratulated Somalia for the conduct of the elections, “The federal government of Nigeria is however concerned by the report of an assassination attempt on the life of the new president, the following day, after his election.
The government not only condemns this cowardly act, but considers it as an unnecessary distraction that would have brought the country once again, on the verge of precipice.”
“Considering the fact that this is the first time in twenty-one years, that a Somali President has been democratically elected, it is a historic landmark in the political development of Somalia and a source of hope for a better future for the Somali people” the statement said.
The statement urged the new president to move expeditiously to mend fences and promote national reconciliation, by constituting an all-inclusive government that should work assiduously, for the peace, progress and development of that fragile country.
The federal government however appealed to the people of Somalia to join hands with the new president and the government to build peace that will guarantee a stable and prosperous future for the country.
The attackers, who were discovered to be suicide bombers, were shot by soldiers on Wednesday while attempting to penetrate the heavily guarded Jazeera Hotel where the president and Kenya’s Foreign Minister, Sam Ongeri, were holding a news conference
