It is a New York City pied-a-terre with a stunning view of the city's skyline, set high above the streets below.
This elusive rooftop loft is the creation of architect Brian Messana and he has named his latest project Tank House.
The finished masterpiece is a renovation of an existing loft apartment and the development of an old existing industrial sprinkler tank house into a tranquil urban retreat.
A perfect urban retreat: The renovated sprinkler tank with New York City's skyline in the distance
Contemporary design: The living room and stainless steel spiral staircase with views of the city from the windows
The sky lit bathroom which doubled in size and was developed to have a serene spa like quality
Keeping the original loft more or less intact, the apartment is designed to resemble the tranquility of a tree-house among the city's soaring towers and skyscrapers.
The apartment's simple layout was kept, but Messana re-configured the layout of the existing apartment so that the bedrooms had individual access to a shared bathroom, rather than it being accessed from the living room.
A sky lit bathroom doubled in size and was developed to have a serene spa like quality, with a stone floor, polished waterproof plaster walls, and a clear glass shower enclosure.
In the living room and bedrooms, architect Messana added new storage at every possible point behind flush lacquer panels.
The white-painted kitchen which was resurfaced and the maple wood floors which were lightened and
refinished
The circular skylight pumps light through the interior of the house
Polished to perfection: a modern white sink with steel taps
Open plan living area with sky light feature in the centre and a cream carpet laid over the wooden flooring to fill the room
One of the bedrooms with creative artwork hung on the wall to add colour. The bedrooms have
individual access to a shared bathroom rather than the bathroom being accessed from the living space
A skylight lights up a room. The rooms are painted white to make them seem bigger and brighter
Steel stairs designed to encourage the homeowner to climb them to reach the rooftop
The kitchen surfaces were refinished, as were the maple floors, making them lighter and brighter then they were previously.
A new circular skylight was added to pump daylight into the rejuvenated space and the original staircase leading to the rooftop deck was replaced with a shiny new, spiraling stainless steel staircase.
This, combined with a host of new plantings on the rooftop deck are designed to encourage the homeowner to use all the space.
Messana is an architect in New York, New Jersey and California. He studied liberal arts at the University of California and has since embarked on many innovative projects throughout the states.
A room with a view: A peak into the spacious modern apartment which was once an industrial sprinkler tank
Study overlooking New York City's skyscrapers and tower blocks
The sky lit bathroom with full length mirrors was developed to have a serene spa like quality
The sprinkler tank which is now a rooftop loft has magnificent views across the stunning city
