Nigeria is not ripe for state police – IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Dahiru Abubakar on Thursday opposed the creation of state police in Nigeria.

Mr Abubakar, who disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, said that the establishment of state police could result in the force being used to victimise political opponents, a situation he noted is not good for the political development of the country.
“For now Nigeria is not ripe for state police, our political maturity is not yet at that level,” he said.
Mr Abubakar also spoke against the non-contribution of the states to the special police fund jointly approved by the Federal Executive council and the National Council of states as a way of ensuring adequate funding for the police force.
He appealed to the Federal Government to pay more attention to the Nigeria Police Force especially now that the country is facing a lot of security challenges.
The Inspector General of Police called on the Northern Governor’s Forum whose region is more plagued by security problems to come up with something more concrete to tackle the problem saying that the security problems in the North is a result of high level of poverty, unemployment and wide gap between the rich and the poor.
