The debate that greeted the 2012 National
Honours list released on by the presidency on Sunday has taken another
turn with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Anti-Corruption Network
asking that the ceremony be suspended.
The Executive Secretary of the NGO and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye, said the award has lost its essence which is to honour outstanding citizens.
“In 200 years of existence of the United States of America, they’ve given national honours to less than 500 people. In about 30 years of award in Nigeria, we have given award to more than 30, 000 people,” he said.
Mr Melaye said he wonders why someone who was appointed a Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health less than one month ago is being honour with the OFR award when he has five more years ahead of him.
“What I’m saying is that you don’t award a gold medal to any athletes until the race is over.
“We expect that the Federal government should suspend this issue of award because is an instrument of patronage by the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party,” Mr Melaye said,
President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday confer on 149 Nigerians different national honours for their contributions to the development of Nigeria.
A statement on Sunday by the Permanent Secretary (Special Duties Office) in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Henry Akpan provided the list below as those shortlisted for the award:
