President
of Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN) has condemned the
secession bid the people of Ogoni in Rivers state and the Bakassi people
in Cross River state.
Mr. Daudu, who was at a media parley in Abuja, noted that it is unconstitutional for any part of a federated republic like Nigeria to seek secession and as such should not be allowed.
He also rebuked the Bayelsa state government for declaring a state anthem, coat of arms and a state flag.
He claims it is a lawless act that must be checked by the federal government immediately
He noted that it is permissive to have state jingles and anagrams to depict the achievement of a state but when the move goes beyond that, it should be condemned and checked immediately as it has the capacity to derail the nation.
He however did not state if the NBA will take any legal steps to challenge the action.
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday 7th of august passed an executive bill to give the state a legal backing to have its flag, coat of arm and an anthem.
The assembly says the move would serve as a unifying force and rallying point for the Ijaw nation and help to preserve the culture and values of the people.
It defended the move as not being new as all the state in the south west and more recently Kwara state in the north central all have anthems, flags and coat of arms for their states.
